March is Nutrition Month!
The food you eat provides you with a source of energy and nutrition. To be healthy, ward off disease and illness, and perform at your optimal level, a balanced nutrition is needed.
Many chronic diseases (such as heart disease, cancer and stroke) may in part be caused by eating too much of the wrong kinds of foods. For most people, the best approach to nutrition is to follow the food selection in the newest edition of Canada’s Food Guide. For overall good health, consider the following:
- Maintain a healthy weight.
- Be physically active everyday.
- If you drink alcoholic beverages, do so in moderation.
- Follow Canada’s Food Guide by choosing a variety of fruits and vegetables and whole grains daily and preparing foods low in salt.
- Limit your sugar intake and choose foods low in saturated fat and cholesterol.

Week Two - Organic Foods
The decision to buy organic food should be a personal choice, based on a food’s availability, price, appearance and taste, as well as preference to the way that organic foods are grown or raised. While some organic products may give you a small advantage in regards to nutrition, what remains important is choosing foods based on Eating Well with Canada’s Food Guide. Read more.
