Seeing an EFAP Counselor

  • A Counselor has a professional designation – usually a social worker or a psychologist
  • Counseling is confidential. Only you and the counselor has access to your personal file. The information will only be shared upon your request and with your written and signed consent.
  • There are different approaches to counseling. It is the counselor's job to ensure there is a good fit between your needs and the counseling approach that is used.
  • The goal of counseling is to reduce distress and increase ability to deal with the presenting problem.
  • A counselor may ask that your family members participate with you in counselling.
  • Since family problems can affect work life and work problems can affect family life, a counselor may ask questions about both those areas of your life.
