Benefit Plans for Early Retirees

If you're planning on retiring early, you have a lot of questions you need answers to. One of these questions should be "What should I do about my benefits coverage?"

If you decide to retire before reaching age 65, you may continue ASEBP benefits coverage, excluding Extended Disability Benefits, up to the end of the month in which you turn 65.  The following conditions apply:

  1. you must attain age 50 before the date of retirement
  2. you must have a minimum of five years’ consecutive service with employers participating in ASEBP
  3. you must remain a resident of Canada be covered by a provincial health care program
  4. you must submit an application for early retirement coverage to your school jurisdiction before retirement takes effect or your ASEBP benefit coverage is terminated (whichever is earlier)

Benefits for the early retiree group are administered directly by ASEBP.  As such, all records containing specific coverage information are kept by ASEBP.  After early retirement, questions concerning eligibility and enrollment are handled by ASEBP.
