Common Questions - Extended Disability

1 What is a pre existing condition?

Pre-existing condition means a specific accidental injury or illness for which you were diagnosed, received medical attention, consultation or treatment during the 12 months before your Extended Disability Benefits coverage (initial or subsequent) became effective.

Initial coverage means the date you were first covered under Extended Disability Benefits. This usually coincides with the date you became eligible (i.e., first hired with a participating employer).

Subsequent coverage means when there are breaks in coverage (e.g., termination, end of a contract, layoff with no benefit coverage) and subsequent rehire and re-enrolment in Extended Disability Benefits.

2 What is involved in applying for Extended Disability Benefits (EDB)?

See the "Application Procedure" section of the Extended Disability Benefits Guide for a detailed outline of the steps required to apply for EDB.

3 What happens to my benefits when I go on EDB?

You continue the benefits you were enrolled in prior to going on EDB.

ASEBP waives premiums for certain benefits while you are on EDB. For further details about what happens to your ASEBP benefits while on EDB, see the "If Your EDB Claim Is Approved" section of the Extended Disability Benefits Guide.

4 What happens if I can't return to my own job?

During your claim you will have frequent contact with your Claims Facilitator. During that time you will have conversations about your ability to return to work. If you are unable to return to your own job, you and your Claims Facilitator may explore your options for transitioning into another occupation. Along the way, your Claims Facilitator will support and guide you through the EDB process and assist you with any quality of life issues that appear.

5 Is the information I'm sharing with you confidential? Will it be shared with the school jurisdiction?

Only information regarding ability to work is shared with the employer. Medical information is kept confidential unless a signed release is received from you allowing ASEBP to discuss a medical condition.

6 What happens to my pension when I go on EDB?

Teachers have ongoing pension accrual through ARTF while on EDB. Contact ATRF with any questions you have.

Toll Free: 1-800-661-9582

7 My doctor says I am only able to work part time. How does that affect my EDB claim?
ASEBP works with your employer to create a rehabilitation employment program tailored to your needs. For more information about rehabilitation employment, see the "Individualized Recovery Programs" section of the Extended Disability Benefits Guide.
